Involvement of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers in Renovation of Ayagama - Kalawana Road in Sabaragamuwa Province
The programme of the 'Nation Building Development Projects' of Corps of Sri Lanka Engineers includes a massive weight of the country's development. Therefore, it spread widely, especially in outstations for the Country's well-being as 'Protectors of the Nation' under the following sectors by empowering the Presidents vision 'Splendour of Vitas and prosperity'. Army Engineers continuously coordinate with the Government machinery and are a very effective human resources unit. They are presently developing 100,000 km of alternate and rural roads network in the country. This is marking a significant milestone in Sri Lankan Highway road system.
An exceptionally skilled troop of 11 Field Engineer Regiment under distinctive leadership of Plant Engineer Brigade is joined hand with Road Development Authority Rathnapura to renovate 16.5km distant road along the Ayagama to Kalawana main road (B34). Initially RDA was estimated total cost for the project as 970 million which width of the road increases up to 6.4m as two-way road. Complete survey of the project, plant machinery works, construction of concrete structures and supervision of works are handled by the troops. It is a huge challenge for the troops, as the road is running along mountain ranges; there are infinite soil excavations and backfilling of either side of road. There are 131 number of culvert to be constructed while 31 numbers of culverts already completed with retaining wall to avoid seepage. With the completion of this road construction more than 2765 families will be benefited in the area.
The renovation of road was commenced on 01 August 2020 as per the precise direction of the Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, General LHSC Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc to Major General AN Amarasekara USP ndu the former Chief Field Engineer, Major General WMGCSB Wijayasundera RSP USP ndu the former General Officer Commanding of Engineer Division, Brigadier NPA Gunawardena RSP SLE the former Commander of Plant Engineer Brigade and Brigadier MK Jayawardena RSP USP ndu the former Commander of Plant Engineer Brigade. The project is almost completed 40% and would be completed within short span of time with the sheer commitment and the dedication of the troops. Brigadier GWA Seneviratne USP psc, the present Commander of Plant Engineering Brigade is closely supervise the projects providing necessary guidance and coordinating the required resources, while Lt Col KKP Pussewala RSP SLE, the Commanding officer 11 Field Engineer Regiment is take charge the responsibility of completing the project in stipulated timeframe.
