Implementation of Condition Based Maintenance Strategy to SLN.
The global marine and offshore engineers have increasingly applied various proactive maintenance techniques to prevent failures before they occur, detect the onset of failures, or discover failures before they impact system performance. There have been numerous advances in condition monitoring technology, where SLN is equipped with vibration analysis, thermography, oil analysis , oil wear down analysis using Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), Ultrasound Inspections, Non Destructive Testing, Laser alignments, etc. facilities.
The Engineering Directorate of SLN established Machinery Testing and Trials Unit (MTTU) with aforesaid advance hi-tech condition monitoring equipment’s to assist SLN Engineers in identifying an ideal model of Condition Based Maintenance (CBM) strategy for SLN shipboard and shore based machinery based on; realistic readings from CBM equipment, historical data/records, trending analysis and in-depth spectrum analysis with forecasting.
This initiative has yield a potential Return on Investment (ROI); which has identified as the most economical solution for economic crisis of Sri Lanka. This implementation has reduced the unforeseen failures, inventory cost, man power involvement on maintenance, increase the Time Between Overhauls (TBOs), extend the Oil Draining Intervals, etc.
